Ok so lets face it, the truth of the matter is, most professional designers will need to get pretty good at rejection during their career. It doesn’t matter how good a designer you are, occasionally you will come across that awful client who is pleased by nothing. Sometimes you can put your heart and soul into a design only for it to get shunned on first review. Don’t panic! This is a common occurrence in the design trade. You have to learn to develop thick skin.
Of course there are ways to avoid this happening and precautions to take by following a strict design process (read about my process here), but sometimes you can miss the mark slightly when it comes to interpreting the client’s vision. The best advice I can give in this situation is, don’t take it too personally; use this experience as leverage to come back stronger the next time. I know it’s easier said then done, and naturally we all become pretty emotionally attached to our work, but it’s no good wearing your heart on your sleeve in the corporate world. Unfortunately, the client has last say. Of course try and input your advice and recommendations too, after all, you’re the expert and the client will be keen to hear your opinion… just don’t be surprised if they don’t listen.
Another key aspect of rejection in the design world is that chances are, you’ll end up with a great little piece of artwork that you can use for another project! No work is wasted, keep these unsuccessful design concepts filed away, they will become useful for another project!
Bouncing back is key, you can’t let bad feedback deter you. Everyone receives negative feedback at some point in their career, in every sector, but it’s the people who learn how to brush it off and become stronger from it who will ultimately succeed. So, with that said, keep up the good work and keep your head up!
